The allographic manuscript of The Fifth Book (c. 1560) attributed to Rabelais still has several insights to offer. The new transcription by Rémi Jimenes, posted online in December 2019, confirms the text’s faithfulness to the vanished and difficult-to-read drafts, with its spelling suggesting the possibility of an Occitan origin.
