The “repertoyre” of Saint-Victor and Rabelais’s ‘anti-théologastre’ library (Pantagruel, chapter VII)

This article demonstrates new points of convergence between the “repertoyre” of Saint-Victor and two works from the beginning of the sixteenth century: the Epistolæ obscurorum virorum and La Farce des théologastres. It also highlights the extent to which each of them, far from being isolated, brings with it a set of satirical works that Rabelais seems to have known well. The 139 titles from the 1542 edition are reproduced in the appendix—with their publication date in square brackets—and accompanied by a commentary.
