In his commentary on the Nicomachean Ethics, the humanist Jacques-Louis d’Estrebay casually referred to “a certain François” and compared his writings to those of Apuleius and Lucian. This passage attests both to the success of the novels of Rabelais and the disapproval it provokes among certain scholars.
