When Albert Robida set out to illustrate the Œuvres de Rabelais, he had already written and illustrated four satirical novels. He approached this task as a search for the literary meaning of the work and as a work of historical reconstruction. Robida therefore illustrated Rabelais with a deep affinity for this form of satire. In his periodical publications and in his satirical science fiction works, Robida used his knowledge of the Pantagruel works to become an imitator of Rabelais.
