While specialists in Guillaume Budé have emphasized the many sources of inspiration his life and writing offered Rabelais for his own work, Budé has not yet been proposed as a model for Gargantua. The reversal in the celebrity of these two geniuses of the French Renaissance has obscured something that was obvious to Gargantua's first readers. Greater attention to Budé's work allows us to grasp the richness of these two authors' relationship.
