This article examines consumption from a literary and medical perspective. It looks at the manner in which Maurice de Guérin approached the pathology, its impact on the physiognomy of his writing, and its influence on his temperament. Reflecting on the treatments prescribed and the care given by successive doctors, he detected a flaw in the medical approach. In so doing, he drew attention to the writing on the illness in the first third of the nineteenth century and, consequently, the medicalization of literature.
