The Julien Gracq collection at the Bibliothèque Universitaire D’Angers contains fifteen letters, dated between April 15, 1945 and April 24, 1989, from Jules Monnerot (1908-1995), a Martinican sociologist and the author of La Poésie moderne et le sacré (1945) and La Sociologie du communisme (1949). This correspondence testifies to the long, profound friendship between these two former students in the khâgne at the Lycée Henri IV, and is particularly interesting because Monnerot is, after André Breton, the contemporary writer Gracq quotes most frequently.
