Le Rivage des Syrtes is a novel saturated with religious signs, but ones which have been corrupted. It can be approached as a study of waiting for parousia in a community without a spiritual perspective, desperately seeking the advent of meaning. On this view, it is a parable, a sacred drama whose sacredness is only historical, and a movement towards an Apocalypse exhausted within an entirely temporal experience of ontological fullness and imagination which has become part of Grace.
