Using examples of descriptions taken from novels and a selection of novelistic episodes, this essay reconstructs the transformation of the garden in the Enlightenment, in particular the move from a garden which is described to one which is narrated. Moreover, in the eighteenth-century novel, to cultivate is to narrate.
