The thirteen contributions to volume 7 look at Huysmans’ work in relation to the paronymous notions of humeur (mood) and humour (humor). The writing gives pride of place to the bad mood of the author, who vehemently attacks modern values. But the man who loves to hate does not hate laughing: Huysmans utilizes satire’s ability to relax and alert, and he examines the darker aspects of existence with this “humour noir,” (black humor), an expression that he invents.
