The indications that Mallarmé wrote or drew on the proofs of Vollard’s edition of the Coup de dés have not previously been studied. In an “attempt” that pays homage to the poem itself, our text aims to map out a correspondence between form and meaning in line with the indications found in the proofs, which form a Mallarméan system of indications. Mallarmé’s comments also shed light on the genesis of the typographic poem, where hesitation and the impersonal intersect.
