A young Italian medical student in Paris between 1883 and 1890, Vincenzo Lombardi was also an amateur musician who composed piano works. A friend of René Ghil and his “symbolico- instrumentiste” group, he undertook musical transcriptions of several poems, following Ghil’s “language-music” theories. One of his compositions the “Glose à l’Après-midi d’un Faune” was an important factor in the controversy which led to the break-up of the Ghil-Mallarmé friendship.
