This study takes as its starting point Sartre’s review of Denis de Rougemont’s L’Amour et l’Occident and an allusion to the legend of Tristan in L’Être et le Néant. We propose that Medieval courtly love can be defined as a love involving free choice, and to do so we examine a posthumous and little-known article in which Sartre shows that he had given this question much deeper thought than people had previously imagined.
