Mots-clés : libéraux, républicains, révolutions anglaises, économie politique, Jakob Burckhardt, Hans Baron, J.G.A. Pocock, Quentin Skinner.
Alberto Ribeiro Gonçalves de Barros and Thierry Gontier, “Introduction. Transformations of Republicanism, Emergence of Liberalism (Seventeenth–Eighteenth Centuries)”
Liberals and republicans are often understood as two opposing “families.” However, the genealogical reflection that we propose highlights the dynamic that results from the constant interactions between two poles of thought. The revival of ancient civic ideals in the Renaissance takes place in the new context of the emergence of the individual. Conversely, this individualism tries to redefine on new bases both the res publica and the common good.
Keywords: liberals, republicans, English revolutions, political economy, Jacob Burckhardt, Hans Baron, J.G.A. Pocock, Quentin Skinner.
Alberto Ribeiro Gonçalves de Barros, “English Republicanism and the Neo-Roman Conception of Freedom. Quentin Skinner’s Interpretation”
The aim of the article is to discuss the interpretation of the conception of freedom found in English authors who defended the republican regime established in England between 1649 and 1660. In Quentin Skinner’s historical narrative, this conception of freedom, characterized by the absence of arbitrary interference, would be inspired by the Roman theory of free states, expressed mainly in the political thought of Machiavelli. The intention is to show that this narrative is problematic.
Keywords: Quentin Skinner, English republicanism, freedom, Machiavelli, England.
Frédéric Herrmann, “Commonwealthmen in the Service of Liberty. Opposition to William III and the ‘Republican Canon’”
The neo-republican interpretation posits a contrast between republicanism and liberalism which needs re-examining. A case study of the Commonwealthmen who supported the 1688 revolution but then pitted themselves against the new political culture and “credit economy” of William III’s reign shifts our focus away from republicanism as a 183language to republicanism as a culture and a mode of political action, thus showing that the line between natural rights and civic virtue is in fact blurred.
Keywords: neo-republicanism, liberalism, Commonwealthmen, England, 1688, political action.
Cicero Araujo, “Republicanism and Hume’s Political Thought”
This article examines Hume’s perceptions about the political and socioeconomic events of his time. Anchored on J.G.A. Pocock’s analysis, it explores the ways Hume’s political thought could have been affected by the so-called “British eighteenth-century republicanism,” given the context of widespread disquiet about an unprecedented encroachment of economic and financial power into politics.
Keywords: David Hume’s political thought, British republicanism, political economy, wealth and state power, British eighteenth-century republicanism.
184Claude Gautier, “‘The Stupefaction of the Greatest Share of the People’. A Reading of the Problem of Division in Adam Smith”
Smith’s analysis of the division of labor shows that it is possible to reconcile the seemingly contradictory discourses found in Books I and V of his Wealth of Nations. This coherence is to be found in the “principles of human nature” and engages his naturalism. From then on, his conception of the individual as an interdependent being appears in all its importance and makes it possible to requalify the nature of his “political liberalism.”
Keywords: division, corruption, interdependence, state of society, philosophy.
Pedro Pimenta, “Adam Smith and the French Revolution”
The idea that Scottish philosophers have evaluated the French Revolution in the terms of Burke has been belied by studies such as those of Donald Winch and Anna Plassart. We show the nuances of Adam Smith’s position in this regard. Although he did not write directly about the Revolution, he left enough indications in The Theory of Moral Sentiments for us to draw some unequivocal conclusions.
Keywords: body politic, imagination, order, system, philosophy.
Eunice Ostrensky, “Mary Wollstonecraft’s Egalitarianism in A Vindication of the Rights of Men”
In A Vindication of the Rights of Men, Mary Wollstonecraft elaborates a response to Edmund Burke in terms of an opposition between justice and the status of aristocratic land property. Among the effects of landowners’ domination, one of the most pernicious is the oppression of women, which is legitimized by the use of the language of sensibility. This article aims 185to discuss Wollstonecraft’s analysis of the foundations and moral values of aristocratic society.
Keywords: equality, property, sensibility, freedom, domination.
Eunice Ostrensky, « L’égalitarisme de Mary Wollstonecraft dans A Vindication of the Rights of Men »
Isabelle Delpla, “Pierre Bayle’s Society of Atheists. A Thought Experiment?”
Is Pierre Bayle’s conjecture of an atheist society a liberal thought experiment, aiming at severing politics from religion? Such an interpretation might rely on a certain resemblance with Mandeville’s Fable of the Bees. But this interpretation is misleading: Bayle’s conjecture is based on a skeptical, historical, and critical method, which contests the very principle of thought experiments. The separation of politics from religion does not rely on a liberal argumentation either.
Keywords: political atheism, skepticism, liberalism, historical and critical method, Pierre Bayle, Bernard Mandeville, Fable of the Bees.
