Introduction The disease and its places

Montaigne’s attention to disease extends to very different epistemic fields: medical, psychological, moral, political, even metaphysical. Illness appears not as an accident that disturbs a “nature” which would be in itself “healthy”, but as an essential component of this nature. This introduction aims to make a first review of the meanings of this ambivalent notion in relation to their contexts.
