The notion of Sattelzeit has known an immense fortune. The article focuses on the genesis of the concept in Koselleck’s works. It shows, on the one hand, the precocity (1963) of Koselleck’s central interpretative schemes and, on the other hand, a subsequent over-emphasis on the topic of « acceleration ». It is this internal analytical transformation which explains Koselleck’s ongoing fortune but which also reveals its weaknesses regarding the question of the constitutive structures of modernity.
