Hogarth has long been considered an essentially English artist, whose satirical inclination likened him to the writers rather than the painters of his time. A look back at some Hogarth-inspired films, from silent cinema to Barry Lyndon, helps to nuance this view. The “Hogarth model” in cinema has also nurtured remarkable pictorialist endeavors, and has often spread beyond its initial historical and sometimes geographical framework. Hogarth cannot be “reduced” to 18th-century England.
