More present than ever in contemporary world cinema, the nineteenth-century French novel is subject to new dynamics of exchange that reflect a postmodern aesthetic. A palimpsest haunted by its source material, such a film is no longer an adaptation, but a referential work, as is demonstrated by works inspired by Flaubert, Zola, Musset, and Hugo. Removed from their context, nineteenth-century French novels illustrate the postmodern aesthetic of contemporary filmmakers.
236Maupassant ’ s work has often been adapted for a variety of genres and aesthetics. The adaptation of Bel-Ami by Albert Lewin must accept censorship but expresses the personal approach of the director; the 2012 version, despite its faithfulness to the text, is less successful. This comparative study considers the different contexts of production and intertexts summoned by the characters that the actors play. This is done in order to study how such a melodramatic fable tends toward satire steeped in tragedy.
In Minnelli ’ s adaptation, the transformation of the original meaning of the story and a new interpretation of Emma ’ s behavior shed light on the commercial success of the film and its cinematic quality. These result from a cinematic translation, in the sociological sense, of the personal experience the spectator has of the relationship between the sexes. Including a historical context in which women are questioning their traditional roles, the film continues to satisfy our sense of ordinary justice.
The adaptation of a literary text on the screen faces the necessity of adjusting the text to the imperatives imposed by the film ’ s length. Claude Santelli thought it necessary to “add” to texts, but isn ’ t the crux of a text qualitative? Based on these two 237 adaptations, each bearing the name of a Maupassant story (Le Masque ; Une partie de campagne), this study shows how two great filmmakers (Max Ophuls, Jean Renoir) create personal works based on a narrative framework inherited from someone else.
What makes Victor Hugo ’ s work distinctive is its sense of heritage and its social engagement. The realism found in adaptations of Les Misérables problematizes the text’s mimesis (characterized by its distance) and its symbolization. Some directors privilege the documentary character of the writing, others the accuracy of the relations between individuals and the portrayal of the social body. Finally, others foreground the misery of the characters, overcoming contingencies in order to rise to the level of a metaphysical investigation.
Based on a corpus that brings together different adaptations, this study takes adaptation to be a progressive process of transformation involving the invariant (the narrative material that gives structure to the work) and the variant (the new presentation of a work). This reconfiguration of the source text is built around the paradigm of the œuvre (its mythological substructure), the communicational modalities of cinema, and the ideological context of films.
This study makes use of documents from the Cinémathèque Suisse ’ s Claude Autant-Lara Collection to show how an adaptation bears witness to the conception that the cinematic world had of the novelist in the 1950s and its willingness to exploit the legacy of a literary work. In the opening sequence of the film, devoted to the trial of Julien, the hero makes himself the spokesman for the creators of the film and allows them to underscore the modern-day reverberations of Stendhal ’ s chronique.
What makes this French television adaptation particularly distinctive is the importance of the narrative voice of André Dussolier, which punctuates scenes and comments on the action, and seems to give Dickens ’ text room to exert control. A comparison of staging and shot choices with what has generally been preferred in Great Britain in recent adaptations genuinely allows us to distinguish this work from others in a very significant way.
Quite often adapted by early filmmakers, the novels by Alphonse Daudet stopped appearing on screens from the beginning of the second half of the twentieth century. This article aims to identify the causes behind this loss of interest and proposes in conclusion several ways for Daudet ’ s novels of manners, in particular, to attract once again the attention of the various actors involved in audiovisual production.
One finds a discrepancy between the rural and realist dimensions associated with the roman paysan of the nineteenth century to which George Sand is still often reduced and the sentimental, adventurous life of the author. Based on an analysis of the television adaptation of the novel La Ville noire, this study offers a reflection on the variations in the way that this two-part TV film presents Sand’s image and her works in relation to how they have been constructed by French television since its beginning.
