While, at the end of his life, Jean Papon seemed to favour the establishment of a moderated monarchy, humanist thought fell apart when theological-political quarrels degenerated into civil war. Combatting the essentially liberal theses of Reformation partisans, numerous legal practitioners, hostile to the former, lay the ideological foundations of the French monarchic regime which would remain in operation for the following two centuries.
