By bringing the radically opposing theories of Hans Kelsen (1881-1973) and Carl Schmitt (1888-1985) into confrontation with each other, this work looks to reconstruct the fundamental tensions, which, from one world war to the next, existed between international law as a normative ideal and as a reality and force.
