Hindu mythology contains no instances of parricide. At the same time, Indian law does not specifically penalize the murder of one's forebears. The relationship between these two facts, one pertaining to the Hindu collective imagination, the other belonging to Indian positive law, not only indicates the influence of mythical constructions on the structure of the law, but also shows how the law can help resolve certain hypotheses put forward by anthropologists concerning the “Indian Oedipus.”
