This special issue explores the significance of myths within European cultural and intellectual history. It emphasises myths as timeless lenses for interpreting the world, grappling with philosophical inquiries social issues, as well as moral and ethical behaviours. The eleven chapters that compose this special issue highlight the dynamic nature of myths as enduring narratives that bridge ancient and modern cultures, as they continue to offer valuable insights into the human experience.
Keywords: cultural myth criticism, society, epistemology, semiotics, hermeneutics, religion.
José Manuel Losada, “The Referential Function of Myth”
Among the functions of myth, the referential one is particularly relevant. After examining it from three angles (textual, categorical, and chronological), 227this article shows that it materialises in the hermeneutic function according to which scholars should look for the transcendental, sacred referent of each text in the absence of which there is no myth. Cultural myth criticism also includes the different processes of mystification and demystification throughout literary history.
Keywords: myth, cultural myth criticism, function, referent, hermeneutics.
Asun López-Varela Azcárate, “The Semiotic Underpinnings of the Labyrinth as a Choreography of the Mind. From Map to Dance”
Myths play a vital role in preserving human experiences, memories and cultural traditions, counteracting forgetfulness by transforming motivated phenomenological signs into enduring abstract symbols. The Greek labyrinth, when viewed as a map or a dance, reveals a process of desemantisation from repeated circulation. Paradoxically, it also partakes in a (re)semantisation rekindling the original signification. Its prevalence across cultures and epochs solidifies its status as a mythical archetype.
Keywords: comparative literature, epistemology, labyrinth, myths, semiotics.
Leon Burnett, « Le tournant.
Il est coéditeur de The Art of Accommodation: Literary Translation in Russia (2013), Myth, Literature, and the Unconscious (2013) et Translating Myth (2016).
Leon Burnett, “The Turning Point. The Movement of Myth in The Leopard”
Leon Burnett is a former Treasurer of the British Comparative Literature Association and the founding Director of the Centre for Myth Studies at the University of Essex (UK). He is currently an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the same university, active internationally with publications in the areas of Myth Studies, Literary Translation, and Comparative Literature. He is co-editor of The Art of Accommodation: Literary Translation in Russia (2013), Myth, Literature, and the Unconscious (2013), and Translating Myth (2016).
The dynamic of myth is one of change and constancy, a binary combination already acknowledged by antiquity in texts that range from Homer to Ovid. This article, in developing the concept of the turning point, considers the significance of the dynamic in its application to a celebrated novel of the twentieth century, Tomasi di Lampedusa’s Il Gattopardo, to uncover a mythological level that operates ironically to subvert the status of a work regarded as belonging to the genre of historical fiction.
Keywords: Lampedusa, metamorphosis, hero, image, the turning function of myth.
Rachel Falconer, « Entre Belfast et Madrid. Seamus Heaney dans le monde souterrain »
Professeure de littérature anglaise à l’Université de Lausanne, Rachel Falconer a écrit sur la descente aux enfers, notamment dans son livre Hell in Contemporary Literature: Western Descent Narratives since 1945 (2007). Avec Madeleine Scherer, elle a codirigé A Quest for Remembrance: The Underworld in Classical and Modern Literature (2020).
Rachel Falconer, “Between Belfast and Madrid. Seamus Heaney in the Underworld”
A Professor of English Literature at the University of Lausanne, Rachel Falconer has written on the descent to the underworld, especially in Hell in Contemporary Literature: Western Descent Narratives since 1945 (2007). With Madeleine Scherer, she also co-edited A Quest for Remembrance: The Underworld in Classical and Modern Literature (2020). Having trained as a classicist, she is particularly interested in dialogues between contemporary and classical literature, as explored in her book, Seamus Heaney, Virgil and the Good of Poetry (2022). Since editing Kathleen Jamie: Essays and Poems on her Work (2014), she has been working on our relation to the environment in the climate crisis context.
In “Summer, 1969”, Heaney describes his encounter with Goya’s paintings in the Prado, at a time when riots between Protestant and Catholic factions are breaking out in the streets of Belfast. The resulting ekphrases are graded into an artistically shaped katabasis: while moving by degrees further from the situation in Belfast, he traces a descent and return journey via Goya’s historical and mythic canvases, until he is able to confront the violence of history from which he had initially recoiled.
Keywords: Heaney, Goya, katabasis, descent to the underworld, ekphrasis.
Ses dernières publications incluent « ‘Walking the boundaries’: Lynne Parker’s unpublished version of Federico García Lorca’s La Casa de Bernarda Alba », Studies in Theatre and Performance (2022), et « ‘Do not destroy me before my time’: Iphigenia’s versions and appropriations in contemporary Irish Theatre », Studi Irlandesi. A Journal of Irish Studies (2023).
Mots-clés : mythes grecs, Marina Carr, Enda Walsh, Shane Mac an Bhaird, Dylan Coburn Gray.
María del Mar González Chacón, “The Concept of Myth in Irish Theatre. Unmasking the Classical Myths to Demystify Contemporary Identities”
María del Mar González Chacón lectures at the University of Oviedo (Spain). Her main research is focused on contemporary Irish theatre, with a special interest in the theatre of Marina Carr and the rewritings of female classical myths. She also studies unpublished Irish versions and adaptations of Lorca. Her latest publications include “‘Walking the boundaries’: Lynne Parker’s unpublished version of Federico García Lorca’s La Casa de Bernarda Alba”, in Studies in Theatre and Performance (2022), and “‘Do not destroy me before my time’: Iphigenia’s versions and appropriations in contemporary Irish Theatre”, in Studi Irlandesi. A Journal of Irish Studies (2023).
The study of contemporary Irish theatre allows to identify the presence of Greek myths as a major influence; the rewriting process involves putting on stage conflicts and themes that are still of concern for the society and the playwrights, unmasking classical myths and demystifying contemporary identities, as well as creating new spaces for transformation. This can be addressed through the comparative analysis of plays written by Marina Carr, Enda Walsh, Shane Mac an Bhaird or Dylan Coburn Gray.
Keywords: Greek myth, Marina Carr, Enda Walsh, Shane Mac an Bhaird, Dylan Coburn Gray.
Carlotta Santini, “Jacob’s Fight with the Angel. Interpretative Patterns and Pious Embarrassments”
Carlotta Santini is senior researcher at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris. Her research interests concern German culture and philosophy between the nineteenth and the twentieth century, with a special focus on the reception of antiquity, theories of myth, history of classical philology and German anthropology. Her publications include several works on Burckhardt, Nietzsche, Ratzel, Schleiermacher, Frobenius, Warburg and Kantorowicz. She is also editor of the Nietzschean Philological Nachlass for Adelphi (Milan) and Les Belles Lettres (Paris), member of the Executive Committee of the Nietzsche Gesellschaft, and Chief editor of the International Journal of the Classical Tradition.
This paper focuses on a precise case study, the mythologeme of the “struggle with the Angel” (Gen., 32), and its various interpretations by German-speaking mythology scholars at the end of the eighteenth and beginning of the nineteenth century. In particular, it explores some interpretations where myth can be traced back to epistemological and cognitive schemes and which developed a form of psychological interpretation of the biblical episode.
Keywords: myth, psychology, Bible, Jacob, Angel.
Brikena Smajli, “On the Myth of the Creation of Albanian Culture”
Brikena Smajli is a poetess, academic, and lecturer who teaches Discourse Analysis, Introduction to Semiotics, and Aesthetic of Communication at University College, Bedër in Tirana, Albania. Her poetry (anthologised and published also in French, German and English) is collected in The she-wolves die at the end (1997), and Every day I build houses with shavings (2009), translated into French by Elisabeth Chabuel (2015). She has an Albanian Studies Academy PhD in literary sciences. Her areas of interest include poetics, myth criticism, and comparative literature. Her academic publication, Mythical Symbolism of Creation and Quest: Albanian Poetry-European Poetry (UET Press) came out in 2019.
Using a myth-critical methodology and the poetics of creation, this article investigates the surviving mythic fragments and the symbolic language of myth, documented in Albanian mythical narratives. This is done by also comparing the approaches found in ancient Greek or Roman mythic narratives to Illyrians and Illyrian symbolism, taking into consideration that Albanian, Basque, and Celtic cultures do not possess a clearly defined Creation myth, but rather a myth of origins.
Keywords: poetics, creation narratives, mythologies, serpent, symbolic.
233Rehuel Nikolai Soriano, « Supermythe.
Rehuel Nikolai Soriano, “Supermyth. An Odyssey to the World of Heroes and Superheroes”
Rehuel Nikolai Soriano has spent most of his career studying world myths. He is a faculty member of the Central Luzon State University (Philippines), where he teaches courses on mythology, literature, and rhetoric. He also authored articles that deal with archetypes and myths including “The Spiritual Quest in Keisuke Itagaki’s Baki Series” and “World’s Hero: Gods and Archetypes in the Myth of the Superman”. His primary research interests include archetypes, myth criticism, and world mythologies.
This article explores the enduring appeal exhibited by ancient heroes and superheroes through a contextual reading of their myths. Archetypal analysis reveals that these seemingly disparate figures transcend temporal and spatial boundaries. Notably, the study underscores that even within a cultural landscape dominated by relativism, superheroes remain intrinsically influenced by traditional archetypal structures.
Keywords: hero, superhero, archetypes, myth, world mythology.
Mieke Vulkers, “Myth Textuality. Unifying Durand and Kristeva”
Mieke Vulkers is a researcher at the Institute of Cultural Investigation (ICON) at Utrecht University (Netherlands). Her publications about myth criticism revolve around recurrent images in the work of Spanish author Antonio Muñoz Molina, like the figure of the flaneur or the island. Currently, she is finalising her doctoral thesis about myth textuality at Utrecht University.
“Myth textuality” reconsiders myth criticism as introduced by Gilbert Durand in connection with Kristeva’s intertextuality. Both theorists coincide in seeing narration as a survival strategy, detecting recurrent textual elements and considering a subjacent textual layer. The complementarity of their theories lies in Durand’s interest in the existential questions of the human being, represented in myth, versus Kristeva’s pondering on the textual reflection of the individuation process.
Keywords: myth criticism, genotext, myth textuality, Durand, Kristeva.
Metka Zupančič, “The Gender of Mythmaking”
Metka Zupančič, Professor Emerita, University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa, USA, currently resides in Slovenia, her native country. In her research, she focuses on the transformations of mythical paradigms in contemporary literature by French and Francophone women writers, in the works by Indian diasporic authors, and also in contemporary cinema. A prolific speaker and writer, she has published a series of monographs. She also edited or coedited volumes in English and French, the latest one with Brigitte Le Juez, Le mythe au féminin et l’(in)visibilisation du corps (Brill, 2021). Her novel L’envahissement was published in 2020, translated into Slovene, as Tisto neustavljivo, in 2023.
When exploring the origins of feminine mythical figures, how can one conclude whether they were born out of male or female imagination? Both male and female projections of social and spiritual relationships, progressively combined in traditional mythical narratives, continue to be modified through time. How will today’s transformations of ancient feminine mythical paradigms impact the emerging theories of myth? Will we still be able to recognise the new productions as belonging to the same tradition?
Keywords: gender, mythmaking, feminine myths, history of humankind, leading ideology.
María Flores-Fernández, “For a Pandoric ‘Archmyth’. Some Proposals on the Relationship between Myth and Archetype”
María Flores-Fernández is a professor of French language and literature at the University of Granada (Spain). She is the author of different studies specialising in literary theory, mythology and landscape representations, including “Le paysage thanatique et féminin chez Gustave Moreau. She is secretary of the MITEMA association and a member of Asteria and the ESCL. She is involved in cultural landscapes projects, and her research focuses on myth criticism and environmental humanities in literary and artistic production from the nineteenth century to postmodernity.
The archetype, conceived as a matrix and transformative core, explains how the myth of Pandora comprises three identities that it has consolidated since the decadent period. Its rewritings are plurivocal in European culture, and whatever mistrust one may have towards this mythical narrative, the cosmogonic as well as eschatological model that has emerged has the merit of turning towards an ecocritical and “mythodological” reading of the first woman.
Keywords: Pandora, myth criticism, archetype, ecocriticism, comparative literature.
