The distinction between censorship (as defined in judicial reporting of a text) and Literary Criticism raises real difficulties. The article is based on censorial reports by the Roman Church during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. What could specify Criticism, namely literary considerations, permeates the censorial reports either as a step in the judicial demonstration, either as a tool to better understand the meaning and scope of fiction submitted for examination.
