Octave Mirbeau, a friend of Rodin’s, got to know Camille Claudel as she was a close member of Rodin’s company. Unlike Gustave Geffroy, an other friend of Rodin’s and the author of a large number of articles about her, who visited Camille Claudel in her own studio, Octave Mirbeau wrote few but resounding articles about her. Seeing her works for the first time in the various official paint shows, he said Camille Claudel was a genius artist. He was on Dreyfus’side, but he stood up for her who had joined the anti-Semitic party of his adversaries, because he was perfectly aware of the unique character of her original talents.
