Sylvie Thorel, “Bohemians and academics. A cross-reading of Charles Demailly, Sapho and Le Calvaire”
In the new genre that is the bohemian novel, the themes of the impotence of the artist, material poverty and sentimental oppression bring to light a new literary spring: the hegemony of prose over poetry. From Goncourt to Proust, through Daudet, Huysmans and Mirbeau, the same common thread stretches, woven by exclusively female hands, which embroiders around the literary procedures of transposition, adaptation and exploitation of the human document.
Keywords: Bohemian, prose, poetry, artist, academy.
Patricia Plaud-Dilhuit, “Gustave Geffroy, a man ‘shaped by the gaze of art’”
Among those close to Octave Mirbeau, Gustave Geffroy stands out as one of the major players in the cultural life of the years 1880-1926. This left-wing man, press columnist and writer, literary critic and renowned art critic, shares with Mirbeau professional and friendly networks, linked among others to Claude Monet or Edmond de Goncourt whose Geffroy presided over the academy from 1912 until his death in 1926.
Keywords: Geffroy, art critic, Monet, Rodin, Goncourt Academy.
Yichao Shi, “Crimes and tortures in chimerical China. Literary encounter between Judith Gautier and Octave Mirbeau”
At the end of the 19 th century, China became an ideal land for a large number of writers, such as Judith Gautier and Octave Mirbeau. Many intersections could be found in their literature works about this country. Learning Chinese from the age of 18, Judith Gautier has carried out various publications about China. Her research on the Code of the Qing dynasty and the religious legends of ancient China will provide us with more information to have a better understanding of the imaginary “Garden” of Octave Mirbeau.
Keywords: Judith Gautier, Octave Mirbeau, China, the Code, the legend.
Yvan Daniel, “Judith Gautier, a ‘Chinese’ elected to the Académie Goncourt”
This work made her, at the turn of 20th centuries, one of the most prominent media and literary personalities in France, but also in Europe, so that she was later elected to the Académie des Dames, founded by Anna de Noailles, and then to the Académie Goncourt, of which she was the first woman in 1910, elected against Paul Claudel. This article deals with the history of this extraordinary academic career, her passage from one Academy to another, her activities and her role in the annual awarding of the prizes.
Keywords: Judith Gautier, Goncourt Academy , China, Académie des Dames, literary life.
Fabrice Mundzik, « Destins croisés. J.-H.
Fabrice Mundzik, “A shared destiny. J.-H. Rosny and Octave Mirbeau”
Closer to the eldest of the brothers J.-H. Rosny as the youngest, Octave Mirbeau rubbed shoulders with the two-headed writer for nearly twenty years. In his Mémoires, J.-H. Rosny elder blows hot and cold when he evokes the memory of his friend. However, a careful study of the various publications of these testimonies reveals the work carried out behind the scenes, in order to refine a portrait closer to the image he wanted to convey of Mirbeau.
Keywords: literature, theatre, prehistory, science fiction, Goncourt Academy.
Émile Van Balberghe, “The day of the Grand Prix. Octave Mirbeau’s article on La Femme pauvre by Léon Bloy”
In 1895, Captain Edmond Bigand-Kaire conceived the project of helping Léon Bloy materially: lottery, dealings with newspapers, appealing to avid readers. The contribution reveals the exchanges between Mirbeau, Bloy and Bigand-Kaire, which lead to the publication of Mirbeau’s resounding article on La Femme Pauvre, on June 13, 1897, in Le Journal. Two years later, the susceptibility of the ungrateful Beggar would wear out the good will of the captain and cause the rupture.
Keywords: correspondence, press, diary, recognition, media.
Renaud Oulié and Samuel Lair, “The friendship between Hennique and Mirbeau, at the origins of naturalism”
Octave Mirbeau should have been part of the Médan group. With Léon Hennique (1850-1935) in particular, a solid friendship was formed, coupled with mutual artistic 485 admiration. We propose to study the special relationship between the two artists, and their importance in the history of naturalism, through a reading of their correspondence and their works of fiction. The confessions of the two friends will interest us as much as the literary criticism they express in their letters, as well as an article devoted by Mirbeau to Hennique ’ s spiritualist novel.
Keywords: naturalism, little naturalists, Médan group, theatre, narrative, criticism.
Jean-Auguste Poulon, “Paul Léautaud or the temptation of the Goncourt Prize. A dive into the heart of the Goncourt first prize”
Paul Léautaud ’ s name has been associated to the very first proclamation of the Prix Goncourt in 1903. Contrary to what was implied by some members of the fledgling Société Goncourt or by some well-established writers in the literary field, such as Octave Mirbeau, Lucien Descaves or Marcel Schwob, Léautaud never was on the verge of being awarded the Prize. Yet, it is this illusion that drove him to scramble in order to get the Prix Goncourt, from 1903 to 1907, before definitely renouncing to any literary prize.
Keywords: literary prize, illusion, Goncourt academy, Mercure de France, literary field.
Yannick Lemarié, “Mirbeau under surveillance”
At a time when anarchism is seen as an increasing threat to the State, the police services begin to spy Octave Mirbeau and establish files on his activities. It was important to return to the documents, those of Rouen and those of the Prefecture of police of Paris, to analyze both the importance that the informers granted to the writer and to identify more precisely the reasons for this surveillance.
Keywords: anarchy, files, Préfecture de police of Paris, snitches, investigations.
Alain (Georges) Leduc, « Octave Mirbeau versus Sébastien Faure.
Alain (Georges) Leduc, “Octave Mirbeau versus Sébastien Faure. An invigorating encyclopedia”
Octave Mirbeau and Sébastien Faure are two eminent personalities of the anarchist movement. In this article, we establish their network of acquaintances and we follow their common struggles to defend the weakest or promote free thought.
Keywords: anarchy, Sébastien Faure, free thought, fights, socialism.
Yannick Lemarié, “Octave Mirbeau and Élisée Reclus. Two faces of anarchism”
Octave Mirbeau is an anarchist. That said, it is appropriate to question the exact scope of this assertion because the revolutionary socialist current is far from being monolithic. In this article, we attempt to identify the thought of Mirbeau, by comparing it with that of the geographer Élisée Reclus (1830-1905), one of the great references of anarchism in France and in the world. We try to discern what brings the two men together and what separates them, while insisting on the reasons for an impossible meeting.
Keywords: Élisée Reclus, Octave Mirbeau, Jean Grave, anarchism, revolution.
Marie-Pier Tardif, “The representation of gender issues in Le Calvaire and Le Journal d’une femme de chambre by Octave Mirbeau. Masculinism, a departure from anarchism”
If Mirbeau can be sensitive to the female cause, he nevertheless remains prisoner of a masculinist discourse that prevents him developping a radical critique of patriarchy. In this article, we will try to identify the persistence of such a discourse in Le Calvaire and Le Journal d’une femme de chambre, published fourteen years apart. We will also see how the representations of gender that the two works shape constitute a departure from the libertarian speech of the author.
488Lucia Campanella, « Luigi Fabbri, traducteur d’Octave Mirbeau.
Lucia Campanella, “Luigi Fabbri, translator of Octave Mirbeau. The ‘anarchist translation’ through a case study”
The anarchist thinker and activist Luigi Fabbri (Fabriano, 1877 – Montevideo, 1935) translated Les Mauvais Bergers (1897) into Italian. The conditions under which this translation was produced, the considerations on the original text, and the paths that the translated text took, are representative of what might be called “anarchist translation”. This article focuses on this translation as a political gesture to analyse the anarchist appropriation of Mirbeau’s work.
Keywords: Octave Mirbeau, Luigi Fabbri, literary translation, anarchism, translation in periodicals.
489Jacques-Philippe Saint-Gerand, “Félix Fénéon and his readers. Style and hologrammatism”
The collection in volume of the 1210 Nouvelles en trois lignes that Félix Fénéon published in Le Matin from 1905 to 1906 sheds an interesting light on a style of life of the time – according to Marielle Macé’s definition – in which Octave Mirbeau was also immersed at the same time. This reunion also has the advantage of shedding light on the various forms of the ingenious stylistic devices with which Fénéon exposes the inanity of banal news items.
Keywords: style, poetics, concision, irony, enunciation, denunciation.
Samuel Lair, “About Mirbeau’s patriotic testament which is everything but apocryphal”
Octave Mirbeau ’ s patriotic will (signed “Octave Mirbeau”) always seemed to be a consensus. However, this document is based on a lie: Mirbeau would not be the author of this confession of an exacerbated patriotism. This theory is confirmed by the documents review: the testimonies of his relatives and the presence of post-1917 evocations both converge towards bringing to light a second lie. This lie has its source in the falsification of facts by denying the reality of Mirbeau ’ s full adherence to the unconditional victory of France and his rejection of internationalism and defeatism.
Keywords: patriotism, lie, ideology, defeatism, France, Germany.
