A few days after his death, Octave Mirbeau’s patriotic will (signed « Octave Mirbeau ») always seemed to be a consensus. However, this document is based on a lie in more ways than one: Mirbeau would not be the author of this confession of an exacerbated patriotism. This theory is confirmed by the documents review: the testimonies of his relatives and the presence of post 1917 evocations both converge towards bringing to light a second lie. This lie has its source in the falsification of facts by denying the reality of Mirbeau’s full adherence to the unconditional victory of France and his rejection of internationalism and defeatism.
