Jean-Marie Seillan, “Colonization and anticolonialism in French literature before 1914. An unequal fight”
In order to shed light on the rhetorical choices made by Mirbeau and other writers to denounce the colonialist ideology, this study describes the literary field in which, before the 1914 war, supporters of the colonial conquest, who disseminated their propaganda in attractive and cheap adventure novels, and their opponents, who were reduced, in order to defend their position, to resorting to the scholarly practice of irony in short texts for confidential distribution.
Keywords: Colonization, anti-colonialism, Mirbeau, novel, irony.
Gérard Poulouin, “Remy de Gourmont, Octave Mirbeau and colonialism. An outrageous article”
In April 1891, Gourmont published an ironical press article about those French patriots who could not take their minds off the defeat France had met with in the 1870 war. He firmly thought that keeping a friendly relationship with Germany should be France’s primary concern. But Mirbeau flew to his defense. They made friends as both favoured reconciliation with Germany. They came to disagree on a couple political issues: colonization and the Dreyfus case. G. discarded Dreyfus’ predicament while showing enthusiasm about the colonial conquests. M. stood up for the Jews and the colonized populations.
Keywords: Africans, Belgian Congo, colonialists, Dahomey, Fachoda, Jews, Oppressed.
Yannick Lemarié, “The Boland case, Octave Mirbeau and Les Grimaces”
The Boland case, named after its Belgian protagonist, was a highlight of French judicial and political life from December 1882 to August 1883. All the newspapers talked about it and saw it as a financial scandal to disqualify the opportunists. Mirbeau, who just founded the Grimaces, is no exception. With the help of Grosclaude, in issues 3, 4, 5 and 6, not only he makes fun of the Belgian, but also attacks parliamentarians and businessmen.
Keywords: Henri Boland, financial scandal, justice, railways, Les Grimaces.
Jacques-Philippe Saint-Gerand, “From mechanics to rhetoric. The stylistic invention in Octave Mirbeau’s La 628-E8”
The 628-E8 that Mirbeau composed at the very beginning of the automobile boom in France (1906-1907) has gone down in history as the text that sounds the decline of the classical forms of the romance genre. Mirbeau experienced on the weight of the rhetorical model. One of the most obvious ways of denouncing the classical romantic codes is the use of digression effects. We consider the various forms that the parabase takes on and show that Mirbeau is an “entrepreneur of the demolition” of a genre and as a promoter of the new forms of novels.
Keywords: Novel, genre, rhetoric, parabase, digression, rhythm, models.
Frédéric Levéziel, « La réception américaine de The Diary of a Chambermaid »
Frédéric Levéziel, “The American reception of The Diary of a Chambermaid”
At the end of a very or too effective promotion, The Diary of a Chambermaid suffered the pangs of the incomprehension of the critics and the American public at its 356release in 1946. Indeed, not being able to meet the horizon of expectation that it had aroused, the film endured the consequences of its transgression of the pre-established reading contract. Departing from the beaten track of standardized American entertainment by exploring the sordid aspects of human nature, Renoir caused confusion in the viewer.
Keywords: reception, horizon of expectation, generic hybridity, representation of madness, post-war anxiety.
Sylvie Thorel, “Mirbeau, the arnarchist short story”
The theorists of the novella genre claim that its origin lies within the confines of duty and justice. In France, during the second half of the 19th century, it would seem that the development of administration, which pervades the most intimate parts of life, reactivates this origin. Mirbeau, the anarchist, thus found the method best suited to his wish not only to speak but also to act.
Keywords: short story, anarchism, colonialism, administration, cucumber.
357Jean-Auguste Poulon, “Mirbeau and Léautaud. A literary fraternity”
When Léautaud entered literary life with the publication of Le Petit Ami in 1903, Mirbeau, an academic of Goncourt, was already well established in the literary field. If, at first, Léautaud plays the literature game strategically, he develops sincere sympathy for the author of La 628-E8, who in return provides his support and admiration. This understanding reflects a union of souls: behind a clear taste for satire and irony between these two writers lies a carefully concealed kindness and tenderness.
Keywords: literary strategy, sympathy, autobiography, newspaper, Prix Goncourt, Mercure de France, animal.
Philosophy of the petite reine”
During the 19th century, the bicycle aroused an extraordinary enthusiasm among sports fans and many writers. Alongside Zola, are the names of Octave Mirbeau and Alfred Jarry. Did the machine help bring two writers closer together? In any case, their common interest for the bicycle attests to a conception of life and literary creation that is not so far apart.
Keywords: Alfred Jarry, bicycle, sport, anarchism, cycle-novel.

The first work published by Claudel, Tête d’Or, in a copy dedicated to Octave Mirbeau, entered the collection of Baron Ludo van Bogaert, calling after him the fans from Japan offered to Rosalie Vetch and the correspondences she received from Claudel. A Vetch collection will then be made and organized by the curator of the Royal Library of Belgium. Later, Claudel’s precious letters to his daughter Louise Vetch would also find their destination to this Vetch collection including first Mirbeau transmitted the first coin.
Keywords: bibliophily, bequest, literary collection, correspondence, testimony.
