In April 1891, Gourmont published an ironical press article about those French patriots who could not take their minds off the defeat France had met with in the 1870 war. He firmly thought that keeping a friendly relationship with Germany should be France’s primary concern. But Mirbeau flew to his defense. They made friends as both favoured reconciliation with Germany. They came to disagree on a couple political issues : colonization and the Dreyfus case. G. discarded Dreyfus’ predicament while showing enthusiasm about the colonial conquests. M. stood up for the Jews and the colonized populations.
