The “Notice sur Clara Gazul,” where we find the expression quoted in the title of this article, is the starting point of a new approach to the art of storytelling in Mérimée. The “Notice” allows for interesting remarks on Mérimée’s use of references to Don Quixote as well as on the figure and function of the narrator, storyteller, and traveler, which becomes the guiding thread in the identification of some composition and writing principles informing the Nouvelles.
