Léonord [sic] Mérimée, the father of Prosper, was a talented painter and chemist who combined the originality of his training with a fertile imagination and a taste for irony which seem to have run in the family. His fine analytical skills made him an accomplished art historian and were a precious asset in his role as secretary of the École des beaux-arts.
