Before becoming a filmmaker, Luis Buñuel was a writer and poet belonging to the Spanish Ultraist movement and then to surrealism. His literature is indebted to a number of authors whom the surrealists hailed as their predecessors. While Buñuel repeatedly acknowledged his debt to Sade, he did not mention Lautréamont. Analysis of his poems and short stories reveals the presence of motifs and narrative strategies that bear the mark of Les Chants de Maldoror.
