In Historias tempranas del libro, Pablo Rocca traces the path of the first printing presses that eventually arrived in Montevideo, well after those of the Jesuit Missions or in Buenos Aires. The author reconstructs the circulation of books and brings to life the stories of a small number of printer-booksellers working in the city. This insight into the period (1807–1851) allows us to imagine the intellectual atmosphere that greeted François Ducasse upon his arrival in Montevideo and during Isidore’s childhood.
