In 1971, Bernard Pautrat gave Francis Ponge a copy of his philosophical exploration of the sun in Nietzsche’s work, entitled Versions du soleil. It opened with the following hand-written dedication: “For Francis Ponge—who made the sun rise over literature—this ‘other’ of a ‘philosopher’ he read, a word I use with complete admiration.” Based on an analysis of Le Soleil placé en abîme, this article questions to what extent Ponge can indeed be considered Nietzsche’s “other.”
