Space and gender, public and private in an English town Private prosecutions for assault and insult in Nottingham, 1303–1336

Based on a corpus of legal archives from the 14th-century city of Nottingham, the article questions the methodology of earlier studies and poses anew the question of the public or private nature of places in the medieval city and their relationship to a gendered division of space.
