Paul Walther von Guglingen’s Itinerarium A “Franciscan” Travelogue

Late medieval pilgrimage to the Holy Land was a phenomenon inextricably linked to Franciscan spirituality: but what characterizes a Franciscan pilgrimage account? This article answers this question by exploring the pilgrimage account of a friar who travelled to the Holy Land in 1482: Paul Walther von Guglingen. The paper explores his references to the history of the Order, his use of maps in the depiction of the holy places, and his representation of the friars as their worthy custodians.
