Alessandra Ferraro and Valeria Sperti,“Challenges and risks of contemporary photoautobiography in France”
Alessandra Ferraro is Professor of French literature and francophone literature at the University of Udine. She has focused her studies on autobiography (Raymond Queneau) and women ’ s writing (Marie de l ’ Incarnation, Anne Hébert, Annie Ernaux, Camille Laurens), 212 subjects to which she has devoted several articles and volumes. More recently, her research has focused on the phototext. She is co-editor of the “Littérature québécoise” collection at Classiques Garnier.
Valeria Sperti is Professor of French literature at the University of Naples “Federico II” and is a specialist in Twentieth-century French literature. Her research interests include contemporary autobiographical forms ( Marguerite Duras, Marguerite Yourcenar, Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio), those based on colonial and post-colonial memory, autobiographical phototexts and self-translation as a personal quest for identity in the work of translingual authors, subjects on which she has edited journal issues and written essays and books.
Starting from the premise that risk is inherent to self-writing, the article examines the autofotobiographical works of three female writers – Claude Cahun (Aveux non avoués), Annie Ernaux (L’Usage de la photo), and Chantal Akerman (Ma Mère rit) – to inquire into how the integration of images into the text involves a risk linked both to artistic experimentation and to an exposure of the intimate that challenges moral norms.
Keywords: risk, Claude Cahun, Annie Ernaux, Chantal Akerman, phototexting, artistic experimentation, women ’ s writing.
213Nunzia Palmieri, “The risk of being a mother. A comparison between two generations of women writers”
Nunzia Palmieri teaches contemporary Italian literature at the University of Bergamo. Her research focuses on a comparative perspective, examining the relationship between narratives, the visual arts and new landscapes. Her publications include Beppe Fenoglio.
Contemporary accounts of motherhood, as they emerge from the pens of authors ranging from Natalia Ginzburg to Simona Vinci, from Anna Maria Ortese to Elena Ferrante, deal with the conflict that every woman has to face in order to respond to the omnipresence of stereotypes imposing the weight of old roles in a society that has now undergone profound change. Risk then becomes the key to inaugurating a new theoretical, literary and existential discourse on the feminine, pushing the gaze beyond the abyss, pointing to failure and catastrophe as a dimension of the possible.
Keywords: contemporary narratives of motherhood, risk, fears, Natalia Ginzburg, Simona Vinci.
Franca Bruera, “‘Do we have the right to sacrifice individuals for the future of the community?’ The risk-taking of speech in Simone de Beauvoir”
Franca Bruera is Professor for French literature at the University of Turin. Her scientific interests focus on Apollinaire (Teatro, Rome, 2020; Métamorphoses d’Apollinaire, with 214Laurence Campa and Peter Read, Revue d’Histoire Littéraire de la France, 1/2021) as well as on the Avant-Garde (Le Troisième Sexe des avant-gardes, with Cathy Margaillan, Paris, 2017), on multilingualism in literature, and on the literary rewriting of the myths.
The article proposes to show that Simone de Beauvoir ’ s Useless Bouches is a play centered on the risk-taking of characters who, on the one hand, testify to the authority of the being who knows how to assume the risk of his own actions and who on the other engage in an unparalleled challenge by seeking through their action to oppose any form of tyranny.
Keywords: risk, responsibility, existentialism, theater, war.
Valeria Marino, “Performing the risk. Katalin Molnar and the ‘moi-virus’”
Valeria Marino is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Turin. She is the author of Atene sulla Senna (Alessandria, 2022). Her research interests focus on the aesthetic of reception and the study of contemporary Francophone literature, with particular attention to literary works that combine plurilingualism and formal experimentation.
This study focuses on the risks that, not without irony, Molnar stages and dissipates in Quant à je, (kantaje). Particularly, it analyzes the risks linked both with the use of a “langue fautive” and to the fragmentary form of this text, by demonstrating that the “moi fôtif”, behaving like a virus, runs and dispels the same risks: that of not finding a language capable of representing it as well as that of losing its coherence and identity cohesion.
Keywords: risk, aggregate, viral imaginary, plurilingualism, Molnar.
Giacomo Raccis,“The risk of history and the need for happiness. La mischia by Valentina Maini”
Giacomo Raccis is a lecturer in contemporary Italian literature at the University of Bergamo. Together with Nunzia Palmieri, he promotes an annual seminar devoted to short narrative. He has published La trama (Roma, 2018) and Una nuova sintassi per il mondo. L’opera letteraria di Emilio Tadini (Macerata, 2018). He is the founder and the editor of the online magazine La Balena Bianca (labalenabianca.com).
La mischia, Valentina Maini’s debut novel, tells the story of two twins on the run from the family and political legacy of their parents, ETA terrorists. This essay shows how, by moving on themes that characterise many Italian novels of the 2000s, La mischia marks a significant departure: it shows the risks that the obsession with history has brought to narrative writing and overcomes the ethos of infecundity that has characterised the work of an entire generation of authors.
Keywords: La mischia, terrorism, infertility, history, generation.
Samuel Holmertz,“The economy of risk put to the test of the gratuitous act in André Gide’s Les Caves du Vatican”
Samuel Holmertz is a third year Ph.D. candidate in French Literature at NYU. He holds a bachelor ’ s degree in Philosophy and a master ’ s degree in Philosophy and Art History from Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne University. In November 2023, he organized a colloquium for the centennial of Alain Robbe-Grillet ’ s birth at La Maison française at NYU.
In Gide ’ s Les Caves du Vatican, the main character commits a gratuitous murder to prove his absolute freedom. This paper shows how the concept of gratuity relegates the principles of profit and benefit in favor of traditionally devalued notions like loss and excess. In Gide’s mind and in the wake of Dostoyevsky, the gratuitous risk is likened to the diabolical glitch in the gears, for the sake of evil.
Keywords: gratuitous act, expenditure, excess, sovereignty, diabolical.
Francesca Quey, “At the risk of going too far, writing under the test of disintegration. The Mescalian Manuscripts of Henri Michaux”
Francesca Quey is a PhD student at the Université de Paris-Cité and the University of Turin. Her interests focus on the multiple relationships that intersect between the notion and conception of the body and writing in twentieth-century literature and art, particularly in the French-speaking world. She is currently collaborating on the Dictionnaire Henri Michaux project.
What style of writing should be used to recount the experience of “no longer being able to think”? How can we capture the impossible instability that emerges when thought is altered by mescaline? Between writing and drawing, the handwritten pages of what Michaux calls “the primordial text” in Misérable Miracle can give us an insight. These pages reflect the risk-taking not only of Michaux but also of his writing, which is challenged by its illegibility.
Keywords: Mescaline, “primordial text”, thought process, pictography, scriptural gesture.
218Alessandro Grosso, “The risk of reprisals. Jean-Benoît Puech and Éric Chevillard face the interpersonal implications of writing”
Alessandro Grosso is a PhD student at the Université Lumière Lyon 2 and the Università di Torino. His thesis, Autoportraits de l’écrivain contemporain en ironiste : postures réflexives de Jean-Benoît Puech, Éric Chevillard et Thomas Clerc, is supervised by Martine Boyer-Weinmann and Franca Bruera. He is a member of the editorial board of the journal CoSMo and a contributor to Philosophy Kitchen.
This article looks at the social risks of literature and, more specifically, those relating to the possibility of an outraged reader turning against a writer, dragging him or her into a dispute that could eventually turn into a lawsuit. Using the autobiographical anecdotes of Jean-Benoît Puech and Éric Chevillard, we examine the influence that interpersonal repercussions between author and reader can paradoxically have on literary creation.
Keywords: literary reprisals, interpersonal repercussions, dangers of publication, juridification of literature, enunciative games.
Fiona McIntosh-Varjabédian, “Destiny and chance in Amitav Ghosh’s Gun Island (2019). A narrative fable for an era of chaos and of climate risks”
Fiona McIntosh-Varjabédian is Professor of General and Comparative Literature at the University of Lille. A specialist in Scott and nineteenth-century historians, she has produced 219 numerous works on the writing of history and the representation of events, particularly in novels and historical dramas. Together with Anne Duprat and Anne-Gaëlle Weber, she is co-director of the ANR ALEA project on the representation of chance and fortune, from which the article in this volume is partly derived.
The article studies how Amitav Ghosh applies the new literary program he presented in his essay The Great Derangement in his 2019 novel Gun Island. His aim is to create a new form of novels based on myth, accumulation of improbable events and irony to show how normal (literary) expectations are disarrayed by climate risk and chaotic disorder.
Keywords: novel, fiction, climate change, improbability, risk.
Franca Franchi, “The collapse of the notion of imitatio naturae. The migrations of the imaginary of the garden”
Franca Franchi is Professor of French Literature at the University of Bergamo. Her research focuses on the structures of the imaginary in Literature, Anthropology and Arts (Eighteenth to Twenty-first centuries). Among his latest publications: “La vie à travers les objets. De Francis Ponge à Yasmina Reza”, Cahiers de littérature française, 20/2021; “L’immaginario dei giardini nella cultura occidentale” (Macerata, 2022).
220The essay analyses the sinking of the concept of imitatio naturae in literary and visual culture from the 17th century to the 21st. Hence the articulation of the study in its development: “The intellectual-gardener as a tightrope walker”, “The intellectual-gardener traveling in the folds of nature”, “The literary adventure of vagrancy in the nature”, “The garden as a mise en abyme of the ‘interior’”, “The garden: place of risk and fatal passion”, “The garden-world”.
Keywords: nature-garden-landscape, risk, Carte du Pays du Tendre, Denis Diderot, Voltaire, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Guy de Maupassant, Émile Zola, Octave Mirbeau, Gilles Clément.
