Alessandro Grosso, “The author as a character. An interview with Jean-Benoît Puech”
Jean-Benoît Puech is a novelist and a university professor, author of a singular work nourished by the invention of an imaginary author, a fictional double of the writer, source of biographical and theoretical experiments (La Bibliothèque d’un amateur, 1979, L’Apprentissage du roman, 1993, Jordane revisité, 2004…). His latest book, La Préparation du mariage, has been published by POL in 2021.
156Alessandro Grosso is an Italian PhD student in French Literature at the Université Lumière Lyon2 and the University of Turin. He is a member of the editorial staff of the journal CoSMo (Comparative Studies in Modernism) and a collaborator of the journal Philosophy Kitchen. The corpus of his research (Self-portraits of the ironic writer) focuses on the work of Jean-Benoit Puech.
In this interview, PhD student Alessandro Grosso questions Jean-Benoît Puech, writer and academic, about his theoretical and literary work. After discussing the meaning and historical precedents of “authorial biomythologies”, the conversation shifts to the fictions of the interviewee, that are underpinned by a delicate reflection on the Image of the Writer.
Keywords: author’s image, fictional novelist, pose, writer, Jean-Benoît Puech.
Martine Boyer-Weinmann, « Roland Barthes, l’exofictif paradoxal.
Martine Boyer-Weinmann, “Roland Barthes, the paradox of exofiction. ‘All this must be considered as said by a character in a novel’”
Martine Boyer-Weinmann is a professor of French Literature at the university Lyon2. She is author of 4 personal books (about Kundera, about self and anti-biographical writing and is more recently involved in the field ageing studies: La Relation biographique, 2005, Vieillir-dit-elle, 2013 by Champ Vallon). Her latest book (with D. Reynaud), Vestiaire de la littérature, Champ Vallon, 2019, explores the connection between fashion, emotion and literature.
157Why and how has Roland Barthes, since his death in 1980, become such a recurrent character in contemporary fiction? The aim of the article is to pierce this paradox in the particular light of two recent narratives, Thomas Clerc’s short story “The Man who Killed Roland Barthes”, 2010, and Laurent Binet’s meta-thriller” The Seventh Function of Language “, 2015. It also critically questions the place of thanatomythography and satire in contemporary literature.
Keywords: Roland Barthes, Exofictional, Thanatomythography, Thomas Clerc, Laurent Binet.
Franca Bruera, “Apollinaire as a ‘stepping stone’. Biomythology of the writer in fiction”
Franca Bruera is a Professor of French Literature at the University of Turin. Her scientific interests focus on Apollinaire (Teatro, Bulzoni 2020; Métamorphoses d’Apollinaire, en coll. avec L. Campa et P. Read, Revue d’Histoire Littéraire de la France, 1/2021) as well as on the Avant-Garde (Le Troisième Sexe des avant-gardes, en coll. avec C. Margaillan, Classiques Garnier, 2017), on multilingualism in Literature, and on the rewriting of the myths trough the twentieth century.
Suspended between the factual and the fictional, what has become of Apollinaire? The article aims to answer this question by analyzing three contemporary biographical fictions: 100 ans avant minuit d’Éric Chatillon, Le Tombeau d’Apollinaire de 158Xavier-Marie Bonnot and À la ligne. Feuillets d’usine de Joseph Ponthus. The paper aims to identify Apollinaire’s mythopoietic function in these models of exofiction and to discover the different degrees of mytho-biographical reconfiguration.
Keywords: Guillaume Apollinaire, biofictionnal, exofictional, Éric Chatillon, Xavier-Marie Bonnot, Joseph Ponthus.
Laurent Demanze, « Immersions flaubertiennes.
Laurent Demanze, “Flaubert’s immersions. The disrobing of the great writer’s mythology by Alexandre Postel and Régis Jauffret”
Laurent Demanze is a professor of contemporary Literature at the University of Grenoble Alpes, where he leads the ECRIRE center. He has published four essays by José Corti: Encres orphelines (2008), Gérard Macé, l’invention de la mémoire (2009), Les Fictions encyclopédiques de Gustave Flaubert à Pierre Senges (2015) and Un nouvel âge de l’enquête (2019). To be published in the fall 2021, by José Corti: Pierre Michon, l’envers de l’histoire.
Flaubert is a central author in the contemporary field, but his reception has undergone an essential shift: from the penman without a biography, he is reinvested like a rabelaisian and melancholic body. It is this shift that we analyze here as a strategy to demythologize the figure of the great writer, in the novels of Alexandre Postel and Régis Jauffret.
Keywords: Régis Jauffret, Alexandre Postel, Gustave Flaubert, biography, demythologization.
159Bastien Mouchet, « Les mains amies.
Bastien Mouchet, “Friendly hands. Cendrars’ presence in the French contemporary roaming narratives”

The article gives an overview of the ways in which the author Blaise Cendrars presents himself in seven autobiographical or semi-autobiographical short stories. Each text in this corpus must tackle the legend that surrounds this pseudonym. The aim of the article is to show that Cendrars’ texts offer a model for fertile reflection on the subject of truth, travel and history in contemporary literature.
Keywords: Blaise Cendrars, travel Literature, myth, tribute, rewrite.
Marco Dondero, “Leopardi fictional character and L’infinito”
Marco Dondero teaches contemporary Italian Literature at Roma Tre University. He has recently published the volumes Leopardi personaggio.
The essay examines some of the ways in which Giacomo Leopardi’s lyric L’infinito has been reused and rewritten during the twentieth century and up to recent years. Attention is focused above all on the phenomenon of the “fictional Leopardi”, analysing in particular two texts: Primo Levi’s short story Dialogo di un poeta e di un medico (1977), and Tiziano Scarpa’s drama L’infinito (2012).
Keywords: Giacomo Leopardi, Primo Levi, Tiziano Scarpa, Fictional character, rewriting.
Maxime Decout, « Lichtenberg mode d’emploi »
Maxime Decout, “Lichtenberg a user’s manual”
Maxime Decout is a professor of French Literature at the University of Aix-Marseille and a member of the IUF. He is a specialist in the writing of Jewishness and Romain Gary, 161about whom he wrote the Album for the Pléiade. He is also the author of four essays published by Les Éditions Minuit in the collection « Paradoxe »: En toute mauvaise foi (2015), Qui a peur de l’imitation? (2017), Pouvoirs de l’imposture (2018), Éloge du mauvais lecteur (2021).
With Fragments de Lichtenberg, Pierre Senges offers a fragmented and casual biography of the writer Georg Lichtenberg, through successive and fanciful portraits that take place in a resolutely extravagant plot. The reader witnesses the elaboration of a counter-myth of the figure of the Great Writer, which conceals a strange user’s manual for becoming Lichtenberg, in which Pierre Senges’ readers are invited to rediscover, in order to question them, the principles of his own writing.
Keywords: Pierre Senges, Georg Lichtenberg, fragment, author’s death, biography.
Franca Franchi, “Life through objects. From Francis Ponge to Yasmina Reza”
Franca Franchi is professor of French Literature at the Università degli Studi di Bergamo. Her research focuses on the structures of the imaginary in Literature, Anthropology and Arts (Eighteenth to Twenty-first centuries). Among his latest publications: The Imaginary of the Doll: Simulacra and Fear (SilvanaEditoriale, 2019); The Fear of the Body of Voice, in Elephant&Castle, 24/2020.
The photographic style of Yasmina Reza’s writing reveals a strong debt to Francis Ponge’s writing. By associating these two authors, it is possible to trace a kind of genealogy of the gaze on objects, and, at the same time, not only a genealogy of the 162gaze that objects exert on us, looking back at us, but clearly a biomythology of the writer in a fictional regime.
Keywords: Francis Ponge, Yasmina Reza, biomythology, poetics of the object, mask and unmaskings.
