Gianni Cicali, “Grand Tour and dramaturgy in eighteenth-century Italy”
Gianni Cicali is a professor of History of Italian Theater (Georgetown University). He is the author of Attori e ruoli nell’opera buffa italiana del Settecento (Firenze, 2005) and of L’Inventio crucis nel teatro rinascimentale fiorentino (Firenze, 2012). He is a member of the Advisory Boards of Commedia dell’Arte Annuario internazionale; Quaderni d’italianistica; Renaissance and Reformation.
During the 18th century the so-called Grand Tour shaped a new image of Italy in Europe. This essay explains how tourism influenced the contemporary dramaturgy during a particular season in the theaters of Florence (1770–71). The records contained in a travel book written by an Eighteenth-Century lady will help us to trace this important aspect defined as touristic dramaturgy.
Keywords: Travel, Grand Tour, Theater, 18th Century, Italy, Florence, Cinema.
David Matteini, “Foreigners on foreign soil. Etrangisation as critical device in eighteenth-century France”
David Matteini teaches French language at the University of Siena. He holds a PhD from the Universities of Florence, Sorbonne Université and Bonn Universität in Comparative literature. His areas of research are the modern European novel between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, cultural transfers at the time of the French Revolution and the crisis of knowledge and letters during the Enlightenment.
In the 18th century, the narrative process of defamiliarization as conceived by Victor Shklovsky in his theories becomes the literary strategy that many French writers use to hide behind the words of the characters of their works. In this sense, the journey of foreigners to Europe – or the testimonies of these – that these writings describe constitutes the background of a virulent criticism of the mores of Western societies of the period.
Keywords: Travel, Étrangisation, French Enlightenment, Fiction, Criticism, Philosophes.
Paola Degli Esposti, “Actors on tour. ‘Artistic travels’ in the second half of the nineteenth century”
Paola Degli Esposti is an associate professor of Performing Arts Studies at the University of Padua. She has written essays on Eighteenth-, Nineteenth- and early Twentieth-century theatre. Among her monographs, La scena tentatrice (Padova, 2008), La tensione preregistica (Padova, 2013) and La Über-Marionette e le sue ombre (Bari, 2018). At present she is working on a monograph on the actor in Nineteenth-century Europe.
This essay focuses on the touring practice of star actors in the second half of the Nineteenth century, in the context of the changes in theatre organization policies and of the newly developed railroad system. The reasons inducing performers to travel abroad – both in and outside Europe – are pinpointed, stressing out how tours allowed for contacts and interactions between artists from different countries, thus influencing their perspectives on acting.

166Elena Mazzoleni, “American vaudeville (1850–1920). The migrations of mixed theatrical forms”
Elena Mazzoleni is lecturer of History of Theatre (Università di Bergamo). Her research mainly focuses on the dramaturgical migrations of 18th and 19th-century theatre. Among her publications: « D’indicibles frissons de peur »: Alfredo Sainati et le Grand Guignol italien (Cinisello Balsamo, 2019) and Le origini del circo moderno.
The origins of the American vaudeville stand in the intersection of various theatrical types, which came from Europe in the 18th century. The case-study of 19th-20th century San Francisco theatre proves that the repertories of the European troupes, migrating to the Unites States, mainly exported a mixed dramaturgy. So, the American variety theatre appears as the result of the interaction between the European and the local performance practices and traditions.

167Anna Maria Testaverde, “Stories of dramaturgic migration on the Californian stage. The Florentine dialectal theater”
Anna Maria Testaverde is Full professor of History of Theatre (University of Bergamo). She held seminars and lectures in Italy and abroad (University of Toronto, Yale University, the Louvre Museum in Paris, University of Madrid). She is author of scientific studies published by Einaudi, Olschki, Marsilio, Ashgate, L’Harmattan, Yale University press. Her research based on the analysis of iconographic and archival sources, focuses on the 16th- and 18th-century entertainment culture.
Between the Nineteenth and the Twentieth century, the Italian theatrical culture migration to California is characterized by dramaturgical crossings, like the Florentine stenterellate. These pantomimic and sung interpretations are also known as the « Italian-style » vaudeville. The adventures and stories of Stenterello conformed to symbolize the misfortunes and the griefs harassing the migrant, a new American citizen.
