Referring to the Tunisian Penal Code (1913), this article tries to model the study of a specialized lexical field: Arabic penal vocabulary. It proposes an approach that is both diachronic and synchronic, studying the different semantic strata of each lexical item. Citing multiple and sometimes contradictory references, Arab penal vocabulary is presented as the result of an interaction of socio-political factors influencing the conception of these notions.
