The emergence of expressions of insolence in English: a constructional approach

This study takes a diachronic constructional view of the emergence of a micro construction - “insolence”> / ↔ “insolence”> having led to a morphological schema instantiated by the adjectives lippy [1875], cheeky [1838], facy (obs.) [1607] and nervy [1896]. A corpus study using COHA provides qualitative and quantitative data with a view to testing this hypothesis.
