There are very few studies on hypocorisms in Spanish and fewer still on those ending in -i. These add emphasis to the typical connotations of hypocorisms. They also display different behavior regarding general mechanisms of hypocoristic formation (metaplasms). Operations of vowel substitution are highly productive (Petra > Petri), whereas apheresis and syncopations are completely unproductive in relation to shortening. Cases of lengthening through adding the suffix are rare.
