This paper is shaped by the author’s many years’ experience as a member of the committees responsible for the German spelling reform, as well as his later critical stance towards the reform. The paper presents the main stakeholders responsible for the reform, the idea behind the reform and the reasons for its failure. It delivers an analysis of the main features, strengths and weaknesses of German spelling, and a brief outline of the background to the debate on the spelling reform.
