Scrutinizing Nodier’s relationship with Russia opens up ways of highlighting the ambiguous representation of Russia in the French imagination in the first half of the nineteenth century. Associated with the wars waged against the Republic and later against the First Empire, Russia would appear to be a great expanding imperium, as evidenced by contemporary perceptions of Odesa’s lyceum, where Nodier planned to teach.
