Theater without the stage”
Nodier’s contemporaries were treated to a wealth of dramatic works that were never seen under the footlights, and in many cases were not intended to be, whether they were poems or even plays. This paradox of theater without the stage, which nevertheless is a part of the history of theater, invites us to question the thus revealed potentialities of the dramatic genre and the virtues of the spectacle of words.
Keywords: Hénault, Vitet, dramatic poem, theater to be read, liberal, Sand, mystery, Gain-Montaignac, Dumas, read theater.
Poetry, theatricality, musicality”
Written in 1824 and published in the Annales romantiques in 1826, “Le Cor” is the result of intense aesthetic reflection carried out by Alfred de Vigny early in his career. A remnant of Roland, an unfinished tragedy, and inspired by readings of Shakespeare and Wieland, this poem bears witness to the extraordinary inventiveness of the Romantic poets of the 1820s and shows the extent to which early Romanticism was above all an undertaking to renew literary forms and genres.
Keywords: Carolingian, tragic, epic, musicality, prosody.
Angleterre élisabéthaine et Siècle d’Or espagnol »
Didier Souiller, “The ‘scène historique’ in the light of Baroque historical theater. Elizabethan England and the Spanish Golden Age”
For the dramatic works of Romanticism and, in particular, its historical theater, the inspiration of Baroque theater stands out: Elizabethan (especially Shakespearean) and Spanish Golden Age legacies are laid claim to in a major way. On the Romantic stage, Baroque theater offers practical examples, without concern for theorization, of a stage writing of history, as well as the experience of its empirical limits, which are at once literary, material, and philosophical.
Keywords: Romanticism, dramatization, history, Shakespeare, Calderón, metatheater.
Stéphane Arthur, “Gain-Montaignac, or theater without a stage”
Gain-Montaignac is a neglected pioneer of the audacity of Romantic theater. The failure of his comedy Fouquet on the stage, shortly before the first fall of Napoleon, did not dissuade him from writing three plays published posthumously under the title Théâtre and intended to be read. In this work, Gain-Montaignac aims, in his “Discours préliminaire,” to reform theater, which foreshadowed Stendhal’s recommendations in Racine et Shakespeare and Hugo’s in the preface to Cromwell.
Keywords: “scène historique”, Romantic, Napoleon, Montesquieu, Rousseau, Roederer, Charles V.
Jean-Philippe Llored, “History and representation in Vitet’s trilogy”
At the beginning of the nineteenth century, some authors sought to question the new relationship with the world by means of the “scène historique.” Ludovic Vitet, with his trilogy La Ligue, was, if not the instigator, then at least the chief architect. These works could not be performed, because of the multiplicity of locations and the number of characters, but also because they were intended to highlight a poetics of history whose dramatic effects may have been purely accidental.
Keywords: “scène historique”, dramaturgy, renewal of genres, Henry III, Catherine de’ Medici, Guise.
Sophie Mentzel, “‘Scènes historiques’ under the Restoration, or the return of the historical repressed”
At a time when the restored monarchy was trying to “renew the chain of the times” by concealing the “disastrous errors” of the past, “scènes historiques” came to represent, on an imaginary stage not subject to censorship, the violence of history that the official stage refused to allow to be expressed. Revolutionary violence found in this hybrid genre a paradoxical site of dramatic expression that revealed to the reader that which the theater spectator was not yet allowed to see.
Keywords: Dittmer, Cavé, Collé, liberal, horror, romantic drama, memory.
171Valentina Ponzetto, “George Sand’s ‘spectacle in an armchair’. Between ‘scène historique’ and dramatic poetry”
Sand’s first two plays, Une conspiration en 1537 (1831) and Aldo le rimeur (RDM, 1833), belong to the genres of the “scène historique” and the dramatic poem respectively. This article first examines the possible reasons for these genre choices in the context of the 1830s, then the subversive potential of the two plays, between the representation of violence and the demand for freedom, finally drawing from these considerations some principles of a purely Sandian dramaturgy.
Keywords: Romanticism, dramaturgy, theater studies, theater to be read, theater and violence, fantasy drama, genre aesthetics, gender studies, woman writer.
Esther Pinon, “Quinet’s Ahasvérus, or the steps of history”
In 1833, Edgar Quinet seized on a historically dated genre and myth, the mystery and legend of the wandering Jew, in order to consider the movement of history. Ahasvérus is, from a genre and aesthetic point of view, a work on the fringes of its era but which nevertheless moves along with it. A play to be read, a prose poem, Quinet’s play can be read as a unique creative wandering in its genre, but also as a step forward in the Romantic quest for a form capable of telling and showing history.
Keywords: Romanticism, dramatic poem, progress, palingenesis, representation.
Georges Zaragoza, « Le Dernier banquet des Girondins. Étude ou scène historique ? »
Historical study or ‘scène historique’?”
Charles Nodier devoted a large portion of his creative output to history, while refusing to call himself a historian. He saw himself as a witness to a period rich in upheavals of all kinds. The tale is therefore the form most in keeping with this stance. He makes a notable exception with Le Dernier banquet des Girondins, which he writes in a hybrid form close to the “scène historique,” without deciding to adopt all of its criteria, and adjacent to the historical drama, without wanting to give up narration altogether.
Keywords: drama, historical theater, Dumas, Terror, storyteller, chronicler, Vitet.
Véra Milchina, “Yet another source of Edmond Rostand’s Cyrano de Bergerac”
Among the possible sources of Cyrano de Bergerac, one has been neglected: the short story by Nodier (who played a pioneering role in the rehabilitation of Cyrano de Bergerac in the nineteenth century) L’Amour et le Grimoire, first published in 1832. In this tale, a young woman falls in love with the author of letters written on behalf of a less literate young man.
Keywords: heroic comedy, inspiration, intertextuality, Paul Lacroix, Arsenal, Gautier, parody, Faust.
