The “scène historique” in the light of Baroque historical theater Elizabethan England and the Spanish Golden Age

For the dramatic works of Romanticism and, in particular, its historical theater, the inspiration of Baroque theater stands out: Elizabethan (especially Shakespearean) and Spanish Golden Age legacies are laid claim to in a major way. On the Romantic stage, Baroque theater offers practical examples, without concern for theorization, of a stage writing of history, as well as the experience of its empirical limits, which are at once literary, material, and philosophical.
