The article examines the review of the 1859 Salon that Alexandre Dumas wrote for L’Indépendance belge within the framework of the reception of contemporary art in France and examines it in relation to the discourses and the practices of art criticism in the second half of the 19th century, in the context of the emergence of the new paradigm of modernity.
