Claudel's diary can be confusing because of its abundance and heterogeneity. Initially made up of quotations from the Bible or the Fathers of the Church, it expands to include travel notes and family allusions, sometimes to the work in progress. It also becomes the instrument of the spiritual life and then relates an intimacy in God, which implies a look at oneself without egotism. It almost reaches that somewhat mysterious intimacy that the texts of the great mystics suggest.
