Paul Claudel spent the dark years 1940-45 in his castle of Brangues,a small village in the north of the Department of Isère. Initially inclined to adhere to Marshal Pétain's domestic policy project, the former ambassador could not accept the policy of collaboration, and the mystical Catholic was disgusted by anti-Semitism. While remaining a notable person attentive to his literary and economic interests, his diary and public letters bear witness to his strong rejection of the Vichy regime.
