Claudel claimed that he had experienced, from his youth, the “vocation of the Universe”. This desire to “travel the world” inspired him to choose a consular and diplomatic career. His theatrical creation reflects this aspiration to the universal. From Tête d’Or, conceived as a “drama of the possession of the earth”, to the Soulier de satin, whose hero aspires to “make a world”, to make “the perfect beautiful apple”, and to the Livre de Christophe Colomb where the explorer dreams of “reuniting the earth”.
