All poets are ‘inspired’ by their language, by their memory and their unconscious, by the poem on which they are working. God presumably inspires a Christian poet as much in his poetry as in his other acts. As for Biblical poetry, He seems as much concerned for the art of what they write as for the truths they announce, and He allows them to proceed as any poet, in looking for ways of saying, hesitating, and crossing out.
